Energy staff are fired up for charity run

More than 60 women from a Sunderland customer service centre warmed up for one of the city’s biggest charity runs last weekend.
The employees from EDF Energy at Doxford Park slipped on their sports gear to take part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Herrington Country Park on Sunday May 10 2009.
Steph Birchnall, team manager at EDF Energy, said: “It’s fantastic that so many of us from the same workplace are taking part in the run and raising money for a very good cause.
“Two of my close family members have recently recovered from cancer and I really wanted to do something for all of the people behind their recovery. Cancer Research is an extremely worthwhile cause, which works hard to find ways to treat and prevent cancer.”
The Race for Life is a series of 230 annual charity runs organised across the country by Cancer Research UK. Last year 3,000 Sunderland runners took part in the 5k run and raised £169,750 for Cancer Research.
The race is open to women and some of the men at EDF Energy will be helping out on the day to set up for the race and to support the runners.

Kevin Gatens, director of customer services at EDF Energy, said: “This is a great effort on behalf of the staff here at Doxford. I’m sure everyone taking part in the run will have a great day and it’s all for a very good cause.”
The money raised funds the work of over 4,500 doctors, nurses and scientists dedicated to finding new ways to diagnose, treat and prevent cancer.
EDF Energy employs more than 1,500 staff in Sunderland, the company’s largest UK operation. They provide crucial customer contact and billing services for residential and small business customers, across the country and are responsible for managing more than 30 million energy bills each year.
