Has any one set any clear guidelines on managing absence and lateness during the probationary period? We have 3 months probation and recently have experienced some concerns regarding new recruits attendance.
Managing attendance and absence in probation

We have regular reviews with new starts throughout their probationary period. Staff are told that lateness and absence may result in their probationary period being extended or terminated.
There is a staged salary increase which rises once probation is signed off. This tends to act as a incentive, you normally find that the people that tend to be late or sick , will continue to be and this allows you to manage them out prior to signing them off probation.
If all else fails use the three strike rule (but make it clear to the probationee's from the outset).
The important thing is to communicate with them on each occasion. If any of my staff were late I would expect to be told why. If they were sick, do a return to work with them and you will soon get a feel for if they are telling the truth or not.
Because I did this for all of my staff the new starters saw it right from the begiining and knew what to expect.
But I also used to chat to all of my staff each day about general things, football, cars, the children etc. That helps you get a feel for if everthing is OK at home.
