Teresa

Firstly I empathise with how you are feeling. Being made redundant is never nice. The first time it hit me quite hard.

I think that it was quite legal, but not the best way to have done it.

Best practice would have been for them to waited until you had returned from holiday and then to have told you on your first day back at work.

Peter

I think that you legally have to write to all employees who are directly effected by by redundancy i.e. all of those whose job is 'at risk'

They then have a period of time to try to find another job in the company, find another job outside of the go through the appeal process.

You only have to write to the specific people who have been identified of being 'at risk' and not the whole team.

I hope that this helps.

Nice article Gwenllian. A tip and a question.

One thing that's always useful I've found is to make sure there is someone else ready to take the person for a coffee and chat immediately they receive the bad news. You cannot do this yourself as it confuses the message. But it's essential to support them emotionally as well as to clear the desk succinctly without disruption or delay.

The question: Under what conditions do you have to write to all people who could be made redundant, warning them as such, even though you know many of them won't be affected? A friend who restructures businesses told me this was obligatory
