Public want chart music when on hold
Latest research reveals that 80% of the UK public prefer listening to music when they are put on hold during phone calls.
The results of the survey undertaken by PRS for Music, of 2,000 people across the UK, also show that contemporary chart music is the genre we would most like to listen to whilst on hold, with relaxing music and rock music polling in second and third places, respectively.
While many companies that employ music on hold (MOH) do so by using specific genres to target their customer base, the results show a clear leaning towards pop music. Of the 20% of the public which prefer no music on hold, if they were forced to listen to music then the relaxing and classical genres would be their preferred choices.
Favourite genres of music to listen to when ‘on hold’:
- Contemporary chart music - 35%
- Relaxing music - 26%
- Rock music - 16%
- Classical music - 15%
- Non mainstream music - 8%
Favourite genres of music to listen to when ‘on hold’ for people who would rather not listen at all:
- Relaxing music - 28%
- Classical music - 25%
- Contemporary chart music - 16%
- Rock music - 15%
- Non mainstream music – 8%
Commenting on the results, Ellis Rich, chairman of PRS, said: “Businesses have long taken the opportunity to utilise the benefits of music. Whether it is a form of entertaining customers, boosting staff morale or looking to add an image to the brand, the power of music certainly allows businesses to communicate with their audience better. ”
