Steve Cutler explains the benefits of using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) technology.

Organisations are increasingly turning their back on ISDN technology to enjoy the many benefits of SIP technology.

These benefits include:

  • Limitless capacity – You no longer need to be constrained by the physical number of lines coming into your building.
  • Flexibility – As your business requirements change, more capacity is needed to handle seasonal peaks or throttle back during quieter times. Using SIP can give you that “pay as you consume” flexibility.
  • Cost savings – The average cost savings enjoyed by those switching to SIP are typically between 30% and 40%.
  • Resilience – SIP-based networks with multiple ingress points and with access to tier 1 carriers offer high levels of resilience and redundancy as standard.

For those organisations that use dialler technology, the capacity offered by SIP technology is of particular benefit. The speed and effectiveness of diallers no longer needs to be throttled by the number of physical lines that you have.

The same can also be said of the ability of SIP networks to handle high numbers of calls per second (i.e. dialler traffic). This ability means that high Answer-Seize Ratios (ASRs) can be achieved. The impact of this is that the percentage of answered calls improves and contact rates and talk time increase too.

At Nexbridge we have built a network specifically designed to handle dialler traffic, characterised by the ability to handle high numbers of calls per second. Algorithms have been developed that are capable of delaying calls for milliseconds. The delay is not long enough to affect your operation, but it is long enough to enable calls to be set up in a controlled fashion and to positively impact dialler performance.

The perceptions surrounding SIP and, in particular, how it applies to handling dialler traffic are rapidly disappearing. The question that remains to be answered by call centres and suppliers alike is when we will embrace SIP – not if.
