Process improvement is about taking stupid stuff out
I might just have said this before…
- It is not about adding more controls
- It is not about adding handoffs to specialist groups
- It is not about adding measures, checks and balances
Process improvement is about taking out the stupid stuff. Stupid stuff that gets in the way of people trying to do a good job. Once you have taken out all the stupid stuff, then what you have left will be the perfect process.
Staff motivation is about taking painful stuff out
Who said you can add motivation?
- It is not about adding targets
- It is not about setting up competitions
- It is not about team awaydays (though if you are reading, Jimmy, Edinburgh is nice)
Motivation is about taking away all the painful stuff. Painful stuff that stops people from wanting to do a good job. Once you have taken away all the painful stuff then you are left with a motivated workforce.
A funny thought
Maybe the stupid stuff that ruins your processes is the same as the painful stupid stuff that demotivates your staff:
- Sign offs
- Audits
- Delays
- Handoffs
- Authorisations
