A SWALEC employee has scaled new heights to raise £500 for a leading national cancer care charity.

23-year-old customer service advisor Lewis Stait climbed more than 3,407 metres in total to complete the gruelling National Three Peaks Challenge in aid of Marie Curie.

He was supported by kind-hearted SWALEC workers from the company’s Cardiff Gate headquarters, who carried out fundraising activities, including cake sales and raffles, for their colleague, to raise £370 towards his target.

Lewis was part of a group of four competitors attempting to climb three mountains – Snowdon in Wales, Ben Nevis in Scotland and Scafell Pike in England – in less than 24 hours.

He said, “My team members were inspired to take part in the challenge because of their own links with Marie Curie, or experiences with cancer, and I wanted to support them and make the most of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I regularly play football anyway but also went cycling, ran, walked in the Brecon Beacons and climbed Pen y Fan Mountain to try and prepare for the event. It seemed to help because the only aches and pains I suffered afterwards were in the soles of my feet!

“A lot of effort was made for the event and the support I have received from my colleagues in the office and from the general public has been amazing. The whole challenge has been very daunting yet exciting. We were lucky to get good weather right up until the end and I am very glad that I did it because it’s always been one of my goals. It’s been an added bonus to raise so much money for such a worthwhile cause.”

Lewis and his SWALEC colleagues also plan to hold a fundraising disco and cabaret event in September, where all proceeds will be given to Marie Curie.
