100% pass rate on a new scheme for npower launched to help jobseekers in numeracy skills.
All 21 recruits passed the course with flying colours and are now employed at npower’s Sunderland and Peterlee contact centres.
The scheme was developed when npower approached Sunderland City Council, having identified that otherwise excellent candidates were unable to find employment due to poor numeracy skills. The Council’s business investment team, alongside npower and the University of Sunderland, developed the numeracy initiative.
So far, 15 people have passed the course in Sunderland and six in County Durham after npower joined forces with Sunderland City Council, Durham County Council and the University of Sunderland to help find a way to refresh the maths skills of candidates who excelled in all other parts of the recruitment process.
Councillor Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “It’s excellent news that the maths course is having such an impact on its recruits. Twenty-one more local people are now in jobs at npower, and all of them have new skills that will help them throughout their careers.”
Jonathan Miller, one of the recruits now working with npower following his success with the programme, said: “Completing the maths course gave me the knowledge and understanding of what maths is actually used for in npower. As the course was interactive, it made it fun. I learnt about things such as the calorific value of gas, which I had never used before.”
“Now I am doing the role, I really enjoy it and, although it can be challenging at times, I want to make the most of the opportunity and progress within npower using the skills I had already and the new ones that I have been given. I think completing the course shows the commitment I have to improve my skills.”
