A new system to eliminate annoying call centre queues was pitched on the BBC TV show Dragons’ Den on 21 October.

Entrepreneur Matt King is the brains behind WeQ4U, a smart free app which saves people from being held in queues at call centres – one of the nation’s biggest gripes.

The phone remains the most popular channel of communication for inbound and outbound contact (Infinity CCS 2012 survey), with 70% of people preferring to make contact using their phone as opposed to email, text or social media.

The average UK consumer, however, spends 45 hours a year waiting on the phone (source: Co-op). And 60% of customers say they find it difficult to get through to call centres (source: Future Foundation).  Which is why Matt has developed a clever queuing robot that does all the waiting for you.

Since its launch earlier this year, the app has been downloaded more than 10,000 times, saving every single user, on average, a hefty £76 pounds per year.

The smart time- and money-saving device works with any phone and is available via iTunes and Android for mobile phone users, connecting them to hundreds of thousands of 08 numbers for free, saving them 30p per minute on their 08 calls.

Matt failed to gain an investment in his idea and received a rough ride at the hands of the Dragons.

  • Just seen it… agree with the dragons, the valuation is far too high. However the solution was solid. Matt copped well under pressure.

  • 10 minutes of advertising on BBC 1. You can’t buy that!

  • Not sure I’ve ever seen anyone quite THAT arrogant on Dragons Den! Great idea…shame the chap presenting it is that rude!

  • I have never seen such a rude and arrogant person on Dragons Den. It shows that all the education in the world cannot teach somebody manners and respect!

  • Everyone knows the Dragons always ask for at least double the equity offered – Matt was simply low-balling them. He as in there for more than one hour and was prepared to negotiate, however there was no opportunity to do so. In fact it was hard to get a word in edge-ways pretty much all the time and he had to hold his own somehow. Some clever BBC editing!

The real tragedy here is that the BBC edited out the primary benefit of the app, which is that it saves mobile users 30p per minute on their 08 calls, whether they get stuck in the queue or not. Most of our users report savings of £10 per month or more. Multiplied by 81 million mobile phone users, that’s a £10 Billion pound disaster for UK consumers.

Mind you, it did make for some great television…

  • It’s a free service so I can’t see how you can have one at half price.

As for rude/arrogant, I was BY FAR the politest person in the room, I assure you. There’s a lot you didn’t see…

    Matt.

  • Dear Matt
I just used your app and felt I needed to give some f/b on it. I work on application/website usability enhancements for a living and I believe what you have got is a fantastic idea – extremely well executed.
Shame the dragons didnt see it that way, tbh the equity was quite a different figure compared to what they usually see – and thats what the whole thing was about.
But as a consumer and a professional in a similar space I absolutely love this app – not only this solves a problem everyone has to face – it does that elegantly. Wish I could explain my frustrations around non-geo numbers – which this app resolves so efficiently it is just fantastic!! Many congratulations and I wish you all the success.

  • You put the dragons in their place. They should have listened to your explanations with more concentration.

  • I know for a fact that going to Oxbridge doesn’t count for much, but your acumen and explanations should be respected by everyone including dragons. As for investing its their decision – but they should still understand why your solution is the best option. Too many times they have demonstrated the ignorance shown in this pitch.

  • I would like to know How much it would cost me to use it and how easy I can fit this into my current CRM system and What makes it different between Current System and Your system.

  • I haven’t watched Dragons Den much this series but I don’t remember many pitches where the Dragons were quite as hostile as this one. They really did treat the pitcher like they’d were something they’d stepped in.

The comment made at the end summed it up well: “Thanks for almost listening.”

  • I find it truly amazing and depressing that anyone thought Matt came across as rude from what they saw on TV. The Dragons are nothing more than complete egotistical morons, none of whom are quite as wealthy as they believe they are. Do you think Larry Page or Jeff Bezos would ask a question and then not even remotely listen to the answer? Telling someone who is pitching for investment to “shut up” is unacceptable and only serves to give an unflattering insight into Hilary’s spivvy business career. In a good economy, businesses can be worth anything up to 15 times revenue, less in the current climate possibly, but it wasn’t an outrageous valuation and anyone who goes in at the maximum amount they are willing to give away is not worth investing in. I hope you show them Matt and thought you handled it with utmost integrity! Good luck

  • I run a fair size business myself and felt the dragons did not listen to you and that their arrogance caused them to miss out. Not sure about your valuation but sure about the arrogance of the dragons..

  • I do not understand the arrogant comments either. Clearly, this was a severely edited summary. I wonder how much editorial input the Dragon’s have. Eitherway, I cannot help feel that they ave missed a good investment. And the ‘free advertising’ will have helped. Good luck.

  • I watched the programme too, and felt very sorry for the way Matt was treated….and unfairly at that!!
I think the app is a fantastic bit of programming, and I feel maybe the dragons have actually missed a golden opportunity.
Good luck to Matt in his future endeavours. I’m sure some, if not all the dragons will come to regret the obstinance and arrogance!!

  • I didn’t see Matt being rude at any point. He may have wound the dragons up with his valuation but thats no reason to not even attempt to understand the concept. There were some rude people in that room but they were all seated…

  • I gotta be honest, it was a very investable idea and Matt seemed like a very intelligent man. This product was always gonna make money. But the reasons the Dragons were as critical as they were, is the same reasons why I was spitting my milk when all over the computer screen when he said 1% of equity. How do you expect investors for NO equity? 10% would of been a more realistic starting point for negotiation, and as a result, it would of been a better discussion.

  • Just saw you on Dragons’ Den in Sweden and I thought the Dragons were extremely arrogant, close to rude, to you. They have all been more or less successful – this far, but they surely need to work on their self-awareness. Let’s face it, they’re not Bill Gates. Some day I hope you’ll show them!

    Mike 4 Apr at 21:44
  • Hi Matt, also watching in Sweden. Thought the dragons were well out of order, but you’d already lost them in the first minute with that valuation. Best of luck with the business.

  • i didnt watch dragons den cos i hate every condescending word that comes out of their mouths but this app is the BIZ i guess if they had been offered an investment in google 15 years ago they would have let that go too, there hard luck ….thanks matt for your app its great !!!!!!!

  • I was advised by my son to use WeQ4U app after it costing me a fortune phoning my car insurance people. I have since used it on several occasions and fond that it does what it says on the phone.
